Unter dem stillen Himmel / Under a Quiet Sky, In der Ebene. Emmerich, Germany, 24th May – 14th July 2019

“In der Ebene” is an annual large scale programme of art, literature and music involving multiple partnerships between the Kunstvereins north and south of the Rhine, including: ArToll Kunstlabor e.V.; Kunstarchiv Peter Kerschgens Kunstverein Emmerich e.V.; Kunstverein Xanten e.V.; Niederrheinischer Kunstverein e.V; Stadtwerke Wesel; Universität Duisburg-Essen; and Verein für Heimatschutz e.V., Kranenburg. As one of three artists from the UK invited to participate in the programme, each were allocated a building North of the Rhine (North Rhine-Westphalia) in which they created works in response to the physical/psychical imprint of the last battles of WWII which took place in the area during March & April, 1945. Karen’s solo exhibition, Unter dem stillen Himmel/Under a Quiet Sky, occupied the whole of the Haus im Park, Rheinpark 1, 46446 Emmerich. Works exhibited included 2 video works and 12 paintings which explore ideas of temporality, recollection, stillness and the suspended moment.

The exhibition opening was led by a speech by Director of the Programme, Carla Gottwein and followed by a talk about Karen’s work by Curator Susanne Figner from Museum Kurhaus Kleve. The exhibition ran from 24th May to 14th July 2019.

The exhibition was supported by the Ministerium fur Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordefhein-Westfalen; Sparkasse Rhein-Mass; Rudolf W. Stahr-Sozial-und Kulturstiftung and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Unter dem stillen Himmel was Karen Roulstone’s final solo show before her passing in 2019.
